Introduction
You are being asked to be in a research study. This form is designed to tell you everything you need to think about before you decide to consent (agree) to be in the study or not to be in the study. It is entirely your choice. If you decide to take part, you can change your mind later and withdraw from the research study. You can skip any questions by choosing “I don’t know” or “Prefer not to answer” that you do not wish to answer.
Eligibility
You are eligible for this study if you are:
- 12 years old or older
- Able to understand and speak English
- Physically located in the United States
Study Overview
The purpose of this study is to investigate how to use data sonification to convey ocean science data in museum environments. The findings from this study will be used to design auditory display prototypes to make ocean data more accessible for learners with and without vision impairment.
Procedures
If you agree to be in our study, you will be asked to finish a survey. In the survey, you will listen to an auditory display prototype and answer several questions. Please remember we are not testing you, we are testing the effectiveness of our auditory display prototypes. The total time you will spend in this session will be around 15 minutes.
Risks and Discomforts
There are no other known risks during this study. You should be aware that the session will not be run from a secure server of the kind typically used to handle credit card transactions, so there is a small possibility that responses could be viewed by unauthorized third parties such as computer hackers. In general, the web page software will log as header lines the IP address of the machine you use to access this page, e.g.,102.403.506.807, but otherwise no other information will be stored unless you explicitly enter it.
Costs, Benefits, and Compensation
There are no costs to you, other than your time, for being in this study. You will not receive compensation for your participation in this study.
Confidentiality
We will comply with any applicable laws and regulations regarding confidentiality. To protect privacy, your records will be kept under a code number rather than by IP address. All written information will be securely stored for the duration of the study. Your IP address and any other fact that might point to you will not appear when the results of this study are presented or published. To make sure that this research is being carried out properly, the Georgia Institute of Technology IRB may review study records. The Office of Human Research Protections may also look over study records during required reviews.
Participant Rights
- Your participation in this study is voluntary. You do not have to be in this study if you don’t want to be.
- You have the right to change your mind and leave the study at any time without giving any reason and without penalty.
- Any new information that may make you change your mind about being in this study will be given to you.
- You do not waive any of your legal rights by consenting to participate in this research study.
