Thank you for your interest in joining the BME Program or Clinical Faculty. Please take a moment to read the information below for further details regarding membership criteria and the application process.
Georgia Tech and Emory faculty with a primary appointment in a school other than BME may apply to join BME Program Faculty. Each member of the BME Program Faculty is expected to be involved in the advising and/or teaching responsibilities of the Program. This requirement can be met through a combination of activities including:
- graduate student advisement and support,
- service on student qualifying examination and thesis committees,
- participation in recruitment efforts, and
- teaching or co-teaching a course or module in a course listed as BME core or approved elective, including courses cross-listed with BME.
It is expected that each member of the BME Graduate Program Faculty have external research funding to support stipends and research expenses of students under their supervision and a dedication to quality mentorship. New Program Faculty might be asked to co-advise their first BME student.
Clinical faculty are differentiated from program faculty in that they typically serve in the teaching mission of the program.
Admission
Tenure-track faculty members at Georgia Tech and full-time faculty members at Emory University may submit requests for admission to the BME Program Faculty. Each applicant must have a current BME Primary Faculty member serve as a sponsor for the application. Required application materials differ depending on appointment and are outlined as follows:
Georgia Tech or Emory Faculty:
- Signed letter from the applicant, endorsed by the department chair that includes:
- Applicant’s research area and track record (i.e., publications and funding)
- Applicant’s commitment to advisement, service, and teaching
- BME Primary Faculty sponsor name
- Full CV and a two-page CV in either NIH or NSF format
Other Faculty:
- Signed letter from the applicant, endorsed by the department chair, that includes:
- Applicant’s research area and track record (i.e., publications and funding)
- Applicant’s commitment to advisement, service, and teaching
- BME Primary Faculty sponsor name
- Full CV and a two-page CV in either NIH or NSF format
- Three reference letters (internal or external) describing the applicant’s research progress and/or commitment to advisement, service, and/or teaching
- Official transcript for highest degree earned
Applications are due
November 1 and
May 1 and reviewed in the November and May graduate committee meetings, respectively. Upon recommendation from the BME Graduate Committee, the final decision on membership will be made by a vote of the current BME Primary Faculty. Once approved, a Human Resources representative will contact the new BME Program Faculty member for additional steps required.
Renewal of the BME Program Faculty Membership Program
Faculty are awarded a five-year term. At the end of the five-year term, Program Faculty members may apply for renewal. Faculty seeking renewal must submit an updated CV and a letter outlining program involvement and attestation of Good Standing in your home department. The renewal application is reviewed by the BME Graduate Program Committee and does not require a full faculty vote for approval.
